French toast casserole

Making French toast is undoubtedly one of the best weekend breakfast ideas, but making French toast casserole is perfect for busy mornings when you want something delicious but don’t have time to cook. In almost no time, you can level up your breakfast table with this decadent dessert.

This French toast casserole can be made ahead of time and then just popped in the oven when you’re ready to eat. There is nothing like waking up to the smell of a home-cooked breakfast or filling your kids up with some tasty treats before they head back out into the world.

All you need is a few staple ingredients and an oven. Try this easy recipe today and see what all the hype is about!

Blueberries, eggs, and flour

Some Important Points to Consider Before You Start

  • Each loaf of St. Pierre brioche bread has 14 slices per pack. Please buy two loaves as we need 18 slices to make 3 rows of six slices each on a 13 by 9-inch baking dish. If you use any other brand, just make sure to trim the bread slices if necessary, so they fit the size of the baking dish.
  • I used brioche bread as it has an enriched taste and a soft, fluffy yet tender texture. Along with eggs, this bread also contains butter or milk that imparts a light sweetness to your dish. If you prefer to use non-dairy bread, challah is the best alternative as it tastes almost similar to brioche. Just make sure it is made with oil rather than butter, as both kinds are available.

Serving Suggestions

  • You can serve this French toast casserole with fresh fruit, chocolate sauce, peanut butter, or Nutella. Or you can take the liberty of adding maple syrup over the top and enjoy it with your coffee.
  • Before baking, you can also add vanilla extract/vanilla bean paste and any other favorite flavors you like such as fresh fruit preserves or jelly. You can also top it with a handful of blueberries or dollops of cream cheese over all 6 slices.
  • Sliced nuts like almonds give a great crunch. You can top your casserole with other nuts like pistachios, hazelnuts, or cashews, but people with almond allergies may need to avoid other tree nuts too. In that case, you may sprinkle hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, or sunflower seeds.

Wrapping It Up

French toast casserole will taste delicious warm or at room temperature, but it’s best when served hot out of the oven. Once tried, this French toast casserole will be your favorite breakfast ever.

Description

The best recipe for French toast casserole, an easy and delicious breakfast!

Ingredients

Scale

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened

18 slices brioche

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

2 1/2 cups whole milk

6 large eggs

2 oz dark rum

Confectioner’s sugar, as required

Instructions

  1. Assemble your ingredients first. Take a bowl and mix brown sugar, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Spread the softened butter on a 13×9-inch baking pan or cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. Spread 3 tablespoons of the sugar mixture evenly over the bottom of the pan. Now place 6 slices of bread on top to cover the pan evenly.
  3. Take one and a half tablespoons of melted butter and brush over the bread slices. Sprinkle 3 more tablespoons of the sugar mixture over all pieces evenly.
  4. Make another layer of 6 bread slices and repeat the brushing of butter and sprinkling of sugar mixture. Place the remaining 6 pieces of bread on top and brush with one and a half tablespoons of butter.
  5. In a separate bowl, use a whisk to mix eggs with milk and dark rum until well combined. Pour this mixture over the bread slices, making sure every slice gets soaked in egg mixture.
  6. Sprinkle with the remaining sugar mixture or any topping you prefer (like nuts or seeds) before transferring your baking dish to an oven rack.
  7. Bake until slightly puffed and golden brown in color. It will take nearly 30 minutes to bake a perfect casserole.
  8. Remove from oven and brush over again with the remaining melted butter. Let cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Now you can sprinkle a dusting of confectioner’s sugar before serving.

Notes

If you’re preparing this for the next day, stop after step 5. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. Remove from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before cooking time and uncover casserole to let it come to room temperature. Resume from step 6.
