How to Enjoy the Holidays Without Alcohol: Mocktails for Midlife Women

Food

December 8, 2024

back to blog

You’ve probably noticed it: alcohol doesn’t hit the same anymore. The sluggish mornings, bloating, and that general feeling of being “off” after what used to be a harmless glass of wine…sound familiar?

You’re not alone.

As Carrie Bradshaw said in Sex and the City Season 2, Episode 18 (“Ex and the City”): “You have to let go of the fantasy.” For many of us, that fantasy is thinking we can keep up with cocktails like we did in our 20s. But letting go of that doesn’t mean giving up festive, fabulous drinks altogether.

Enter mocktails.

Now, let me just say…I love a good cocktail.

A French 75 is one of my go-to drinks, and I’ll never say no to the artistry of a beautifully crafted drink. But as I’ve hit midlife, I’ve come to embrace mocktails to enjoy the experience without the not-so-fun side effects.

They’re chic, they’re inclusive, and they’re exactly what many of us need during the holiday season.

Why Alcohol Feels Different After 40

Let’s be honest: alcohol doesn’t just stop at making us feel tipsy. It takes a toll on the body, and that impact becomes more noticeable with age. Hormonal shifts, slower metabolism, and decreased recovery time all come into play, making those few sips much more significant than they used to be.

Here’s how alcohol can affect your health:

Digestion: Alcohol irritates the stomach lining, leading to bloating and discomfort (and let’s be honest, no one wants that in a holiday dress).

Hormones: It worsens midlife hormonal imbalances, amplifying mood swings, fatigue, and poor sleep.

Sleep: While it might help you fall asleep faster, alcohol disrupts your deep sleep, leaving you groggy and irritable the next day.

Skin: Alcohol dehydrates your skin, making it look dull and puffy—not the glow we’re going for this season.

Mocktails: The Festive, FOMO-Free Solution

Here’s the good news: you don’t need alcohol to feel festive, and mocktails ensure that. These non-alcoholic drinks are designed to look and taste just as chic as their spirited counterparts, letting you stay part of the celebration without sacrificing your health.

Mocktails also bring a host of benefits:

They’re versatile: You can craft them with fresh, nutrient-rich ingredients.

They’re inclusive: Whether you’re sober-curious, dealing with health issues, or just want to avoid the hangover, mocktails are for everyone.

They’re guilt-free: Skip the bloating, sugar crash, and next-day regrets while enjoying a beautiful drink.

Try This: Lords-A-Leaping Lavender Spritz

If you’re looking for a mocktail as elegant as it is delicious, this Lords-A-Leaping Lavender Spritz is the perfect choice. It’s light, floral, and guaranteed to impress guests at any holiday gathering.

Ingredients

3 oz fresh grapefruit juice

¾ oz lavender syrup

2 oz chilled club soda

¼ oz homemade grenadine

Garnish: Fresh basil sprigs, 2 slices of grapefruit (half moon), and lavender sprigs if available

Directions

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add grapefruit juice, lavender syrup, and grenadine. Shake for about 20 seconds.

Double strain into an ice-filled Collins glass (bonus points for using “pretty ice” or spheres).

Top with chilled club soda.

Garnish with grapefruit slices, basil sprigs, and a festive straw.

This spritz proves that mocktails can be just as sophisticated and satisfying as cocktails.

Make Mocktails Your Holiday Go-To

Mocktails aren’t just a trend; they’re a way to keep the festive spirit alive while making choices that support your health and well-being. Whether hosting a party or enjoying a quiet night at home, mocktails let you celebrate without the aftermath.
